Atabey
Atabey is a premium cigar brand created by Nelson Alfonso within the Selected Tobacco project, produced in the Dominican Republic from long-aged Dominican tobacco. The house stands out for its concept, its minimalist white bands and a deliberately restricted range of classic formats such as the Robusto and the Toro.
History
Atabey grew out of the vision of Nelson Alfonso, founder of Selected Tobacco, whose family has a long-standing relationship with the cigar trade. The brand pays tribute to Taíno culture, its name referring to Atabey, the mother goddess of Taíno mythology associated with water and fertility, in a nod to the origins of the tobacco leaf. Its cigars are produced in carefully selected factories in the Dominican Republic, after an ageing process of several years before reaching the market. The house then paved the way for other brands within the group, notably Byron, sharing the same philosophy of respect for tobacco.
