Country of manufacture and tobacco origins
A page separates the country where the cigar is rolled from the origin of each tobacco: wrapper (the outer leaf), binder and filler. A cigar rolled in the Dominican Republic may carry an Ecuadorian wrapper and a Nicaraguan filler.
A “puro” uses tobacco from a single country, as all Cuban cigars do.
The main countries
Cuba: Habanos, rolled with Cuban tobacco, Vuelta Abajo being the most renowned region.
Nicaragua: Estelí, Jalapa and Condega give tobaccos that are often rich and peppery.
Dominican Republic: the world’s largest exporter, known for elegant blends.
Honduras: earthy tobaccos, often paired with Nicaraguan leaf.
Wrapper specialists
Ecuador (shade-grown Connecticut and Habano), Cameroon, Mexico (San Andrés, for maduro wrappers), Brazil (Mata Fina), United States (Connecticut Broadleaf), Indonesia (Sumatra).
