Cumpay
The Cumpay house is a Nicaraguan brand from Maya Selva Cigars, owned by Maya Selva, who runs the Tabaco Segovia factory. Its cigars blend three terroirs of Nicaragua: Jalapa for the wrapper and sub-wrapper, Estelí with its volcanic soils, and the Pacific with its granitic and volcanic soils. The range comes in four modules.
Historia
The name Cumpay comes from the indigenous language of the Tawakha tribe, where it referred to the rolled tobacco leaf. The brand was launched in 1999 and marks the latest creation of Maya Selva, whose name means jungle and who has deep knowledge of tobacco's history. The cigars are made at the Tabaco Segovia factory, where a central courtyard surrounded by corridors houses hundreds of workers, mostly women. Maya Selva also points to indigenous people in the nearby mountains who still ferment their leaves in mortars buried in their gardens.
